Tanzania northern circuit safari game drive

This six-day itinerary delivers the complete northern Tanzania safari experience - four parks, each with its own distinct character and wildlife emphasis, intelligently sequenced to build from one extraordinary landscape to the next. It is the ideal answer to the question travellers ask most: how do I see as much of Tanzania as possible, without rushing or sacrificing depth?

Tarangire National Park sets the stage with a landscape unlike any other in East Africa - ancient baobab trees rising from dry savannah, the Tarangire River attracting the highest concentration of elephants in northern Tanzania, and over 550 recorded bird species making it one of the continent's finest birding destinations. The park's large predator population includes lion, cheetah, and leopard.

The Serengeti needs no introduction: the world's most famous national park, home to the Great Migration of 2 million wildebeest, and the highest concentration of big cats on earth. Three days here allows proper exploration of the central Seronera region - the park's most reliably productive wildlife zone. The Ngorongoro Crater follows as an extraordinary counterpart: a 260km - sealed volcanic caldera where 25,000 large mammals live in permanent abundance, including the endangered black rhino. Finally, Lake Manyara delivers a finale of startling contrast - tree-climbing lions, flamingo-fringed soda shores, Rift Valley escarpment views, and rich acacia woodland bird life.

Why Six Days Is the Sweet Spot

Three days in the Serengeti - rather than the standard one or two - transforms what you see. With more time on the plains, your guide can follow individual prides, wait for cheetah hunts to unfold, and work the kopjes and river courses that most rushed itineraries drive past. The extra Serengeti days, combined with full days in Tarangire and Manyara, make this the northern circuit itinerary that experienced safari travellers most frequently recommend.

Daily Itinerary

Day1
Arusha Tarangire National Park (Full Day) Farm of Dreams Lodge
~2 hrs from Arusha Africa's greatest elephant herds Ancient baobab landscapes 550+ bird species

A full day is set aside for Arusha → Tarangire National Park (Full Day) → Farm of Dreams Lodge, allowing the experience to unfold without a rushed timetable. Inside Tarangire, baobab woodland and the river corridor create varied habitat. Elephants, giraffes, zebras, antelope and predators may be encountered, and your guide chooses roads according to current conditions rather than promising particular sightings. On the 6 Days Tarangire, Serengeti, Ngorongoro & Lake Manyara Safari, this is the main focus of day 1.

Guide's Tip: The dry season (June - October) concentrates wildlife dramatically along the Tarangire River - herds of elephants gather at the water's edge from mid-morning.

Day2
Tarangire Serengeti National Park (Arrival & Afternoon Drive) Serengeti Heritage Tented Camp
Through Ngorongoro Conservation Area First glimpse of the plains Naabi Hills Gate entry World-famous Seronera Valley

Your journey begins at the agreed airport or meeting point, where the LuiTours team welcomes you and confirms the day’s transfer. The transfer is kept unhurried, with time to notice the first changes in landscape and settle in after the journey. On the 6 Days Tarangire, Serengeti, Ngorongoro & Lake Manyara Safari, this is the main focus of day 2.

Guide's Tip: The Seronera River area hosts permanent hippo pools and is a favourite hunting territory for the area's resident lion prides.

Day3
Full Day Serengeti Game Drive Serengeti Heritage Tented Camp
Dawn game drive on the plains 2 million wildebeest Cheetah & leopard searches World's richest wildlife plains

A full day is set aside for Full Day Serengeti Game Drive → Serengeti Heritage Tented Camp, allowing the experience to unfold without a rushed timetable. The route crosses open plains, seasonal grasslands and scattered kopjes. Plains game, elephants and predators may be seen, while the location of migratory herds changes with rainfall and cannot be guaranteed. On the 6 Days Tarangire, Serengeti, Ngorongoro & Lake Manyara Safari, this is the main focus of day 3.

Guide's Tip: Cheetahs in the Serengeti regularly use termite mounds as elevated lookouts when scanning for prey.

Day4
Half Day Serengeti + Transfer to Ngorongoro Ngorongoro Rhino Lodge
Morning Serengeti drive Drive through NCA highlands Crater rim panoramic views Ngorongoro arrival

The day links the Serengeti plains with the cooler Ngorongoro highlands, passing grassland, volcanic slopes and broad viewpoints along the way. Wildlife may be encountered en route, but timing remains flexible and follows current conditions.

Guide's Tip: Ask your guide to stop at the crater rim viewpoint as you arrive - even a brief look at the crater from above, 610 metres above the floor.
Half Day Serengeti + Transfer to Ngorongoro Ngorongoro Rhino Lodge
Day5
Ngorongoro Crater Full Day Game Drive Farm of Dreams Lodge
? 610m descent into the Crater Endangered Black Rhino UNESCO World Heritage 1979 Africa's Most Reliable Wildlife

A full day is set aside for Ngorongoro Crater Full Day Game Drive → Farm of Dreams Lodge, allowing the experience to unfold without a rushed timetable. The Ngorongoro landscape combines a forested rim with grassland, wetlands and soda-lake habitat on the crater floor. Wildlife can be diverse, but the guide reads conditions carefully and keeps every sighting patient and responsible. On the 6 Days Tarangire, Serengeti, Ngorongoro & Lake Manyara Safari, this is the main focus of day 5.

Guide's Tip: The Lerai Forest on the crater's western floor is the black rhino's preferred territory and the highest-probability sighting zone.
Ngorongoro Crater Full Day Game Drive Farm of Dreams Lodge
Day6
Lake Manyara National Park Full Day Return to Arusha/Airport
Legendary tree-climbing lions Thousands of flamingos Rift Valley escarpment Forest elephants & rich birdlife

The final travel arrangements begin from the confirmed hotel, lodge or meeting point, with timing built around the scheduled flight or onward transfer. Travel logistics take priority today, while clear weather may offer a final aerial view of the coast, highlands or plains below. On the 6 Days Tarangire, Serengeti, Ngorongoro & Lake Manyara Safari, this is the main focus of day 6.

Guide's Tip: Check the large fig and acacia trees along the escarpment base in the morning - tree-climbing lions tend to move into the trees after an overnight hunt.

Best Time to Visit

All four parks on this itinerary offer excellent game viewing year-round. Tarangire and Manyara are at their most dramatic in the dry season (June - October) when wildlife concentrates around permanent water. The Serengeti's Great Migration river crossings peak July - October, while the calving season (Jan - Mar) on the southern plains offers extraordinary newborn wildlife encounters. The Ngorongoro Crater's enclosed ecosystem never has a true off-season.

Frequently Asked Questions

Tarangire offers a profoundly different wildlife experience from the Serengeti - one that many seasoned travellers rate as a personal highlight of Tanzania. The combination of ancient baobab trees, the Tarangire River, and Africa's highest concentration of elephants creates a landscape and atmosphere found nowhere else. Tarangire also has a more intimate, less-visited feel than the world-famous Serengeti: you may spend hours exploring the river bank with no other vehicle in sight. Adding Tarangire creates a richer and more varied safari narrative - from baobab savannah to endless plains to volcanic crater to Rift Valley lake, each day delivers a genuinely new landscape and wildlife story.
Three days in the Serengeti - as provided on this itinerary - is the minimum that does justice to the park's scale and the quality of wildlife experience it offers. With three days, your guide can follow individual prides through their morning hunting sequences, wait for cheetah hunts to develop, and explore the different zones of the central Serengeti rather than simply driving the most-visited circuits. Guests who have previously visited the Serengeti on one or two-day excursions consistently describe the three-day experience as transformative. If the Serengeti is your primary wildlife destination, consider our 7-day itinerary which adds an additional dedicated Serengeti day.
Lake Manyara's lions have developed the unusual and still not fully explained habit of climbing and resting in the branches of large acacia and fig trees - a behaviour seen regularly here and in Uganda's Queen Elizabeth National Park, but almost nowhere else in Africa. The best current thinking is that tree-climbing provides relief from tsetse flies and the midday heat, as well as an elevated vantage point. They are reliably seen in Manyara, though no sighting is ever guaranteed - your guide will know current locations from network intelligence with other guides operating in the park. Even when tree-climbing lions are not the sighting of the day, Manyara consistently delivers excellent game viewing: large forest elephant herds, hippo pools, and extraordinary birdlife make it a genuinely rewarding finale to the safari circuit.
The migration is a year-round phenomenon - there are always wildebeest in the Serengeti ecosystem, and with three days in the park you will almost certainly encounter enormous herds. The famous Mara River crossings (where wildebeest plunge into crocodile-filled rivers) occur in the northern Serengeti from approximately July to October. The calving season on the southern plains (January - March) offers a different but equally extraordinary spectacle. Outside these windows, you still encounter large wildebeest herds - the Serengeti's resident population is vast - and the three days allow your guide to track migration movements across different park zones in real time.
This itinerary is excellent for families and one of the most popular options for parents introducing children to safari. The variety of four parks keeps the experience fresh and engaging across six days, the accommodation is comfortable and welcoming to families, and the wildlife encounters - particularly the elephants of Tarangire, the lion prides of the Serengeti, and the crater wildlife of Ngorongoro - are the kind of experiences children remember for life. LuiTours guides are experienced with family groups and adapt their interpretation and pacing to younger guests. We recommend this safari for children aged 6 and above; please contact us if you have younger children and we can advise on the most suitable approach.
LuiTours guides are certified professional wildlife guides with years of specific experience in all four parks on this itinerary. What consistently distinguishes them in traveller feedback is the quality of interpretation - narrating animal behaviour as it unfolds, explaining ecological relationships between the parks, knowing individual animals and resident prides by sight, and finding sightings that other vehicles miss by knowing exactly where and when to look. Safari quality is overwhelmingly determined by guide quality, and we are happy to introduce you to your guide before departure. Our guides maintain direct radio contact with other guides across all parks to track wildlife movements in real time.
