Lemosho Route Kilimanjaro

LuiTours offers this route in 8 Days formats. The confirmed programmes begin with Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa and finish with Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate, using camping in mountain tents and the day-by-day mountain stages shown below.

Its principal advantage is the route’s gradual progression and generous trekking rhythm. The 7-day and 8-day versions spread altitude gain across several stages, with climb-high, sleep-low movement around Lava Tower helping acclimatization. The route is still physically demanding, but its pacing gives trekkers time to settle into mountain life and respond carefully to altitude.

Lemosho suits first-time Kilimanjaro climbers as well as experienced walkers who value scenery, camping and a less hurried western approach. Highlights include the Shira Plateau, views across the western breach, the Barranco Wall and the Southern Circuit. Summit night usually begins at Barafu, reaches Stella Point, and continues along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak.

Lemosho at a glance

A scenic western approach, balanced daily pacing and a well-spaced acclimatization profile make Lemosho suitable for trekkers who want a complete and unhurried Kilimanjaro journey.

Why We Recommend the 8-Day Itinerary

The 8-day Lemosho adds a crucial extra night at Karanga Camp (4,200m) before ascending to Barafu. This additional acclimatization day boosts summit readiness significantly, reduces altitude sickness, and makes the overall experience far more enjoyable. For most climbers - especially those with limited high-altitude experience - this is the smarter, safer choice.

How the 7-Day Itinerary Differs

The 7-day Lemosho combines Days 5 and 6 of the 8-day version by moving directly from Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp on the same afternoon after the Barranco Wall scramble. This skips the extra acclimatization night at Karanga and results in a longer, more tiring Day 5 before the summit push. The summit day (Day 6), descent (Day 7), and gate exit remain identical. We recommend the 8-day version for most climbers, but the 7-day is a good option for very fit individuals or those with prior high-altitude experience.

Day1
Londorossi Gate Big Tree Camp (Forest Camp)
? 1,800m 2,635m 7 km - 3-4 hrs Rainforest Zone

Londorossi Gate is the starting point for today’s journey to Big Tree Camp (Forest Camp). This section is walked at a sustainable pace, with time to read the terrain, adjust layers and take in the changing mountain landscape.

Guide's Tip: Hydrate well from Day 1 - this habit pays enormous dividends at altitude.
Day2
Big Tree Camp Shira 1 Camp
? 2,635m 3,610m 8 km - 5-6 hrs Heath & Moorland

Vegetation, temperature and views change as the trail gains or loses height, so regular water breaks and a steady rhythm matter more than speed.

Day3
Shira 1 Shira 2 Camp (via Shira Cathedral)
? 3,610m 3,840m 9 km - 4-5 hrs Shira Plateau

The morning starts in Shira 1, with Shira 2 Camp (via Shira Cathedral) as the final point on today’s route. Vegetation, temperature and views change as the trail gains or loses height, so regular water breaks and a steady rhythm matter more than speed.

Day4
Shira 2 Lava Tower (4,550m) Barranco Camp
? 3,840m 4,550m 3,960m 10 km - 5-7 hrs Acclimatization Day

From Shira 2, you set out for Barranco Camp at a pace suited to the distance and planned activity. The trail climbs into sparse alpine desert around Lava Tower before descending to sleep lower. This deliberate gain and loss of altitude is an important acclimatization stage, and the pace is adjusted to how the group is responding. On the Lemosho Route - 7 & 8 Day Kilimanjaro Climb, this is the main focus of day 4.

Day5
Barranco Camp Barranco Wall Karanga Barafu Camp Long Combined Day
? 3,960m 4,640m ~9 km - 6-8 hrs Wall + Base Camp 7-Day Only

The Barranco Wall is a hands-on mountain passage rather than a technical climb. Guides manage spacing and point out secure foot and hand placements before the route opens toward the Karanga Valley and Kilimanjaro’s southern glaciers.

Guide's Tip: Because today is longer than the 8-day equivalent, eat well at both the Karanga lunch stop and at Barafu.
Day6
SUMMIT NIGHT - Barafu Uhuru Peak (5,895m) Mweka Camp
4,640m 5,895m 3,100m ~15 km - 12-16 hrs Midnight Start

The morning starts in SUMMIT NIGHT - Barafu, with Mweka Camp as the final point on today’s route. The climb starts in the cool, dark hours and follows a slow, deliberate pace toward the crater rim or summit. Conditions, altitude and each trekker’s wellbeing determine progress; the descent then continues to the camp or gate named in the route. On the Lemosho Route - 7 & 8 Day Kilimanjaro Climb, this is the main focus of day 6.

Day7
Mweka Camp Mweka Gate Moshi (Celebration!)
? 3,100m 1,640m 10 km - ~4 hrs Forest descent Moshi

Today’s stage links Mweka Camp with Moshi (Celebration!), giving the journey a clear sense of place from beginning to end. The descent leaves the alpine slopes for heath and then rainforest, with warmer air and denser vegetation returning quickly. Careful footwork matters on steeper or damp sections before the walk finishes at Mweka Gate. On the Lemosho Route - 7 & 8 Day Kilimanjaro Climb, this is the main focus of day 7.

Guide's Tip: Your knee joints will feel this descent - trekking poles and a slow, controlled pace protect your knees far better than rushing.

Best Time to Climb Lemosho

Kilimanjaro can be climbed year-round. Two dry seasons offer the best summit conditions. The long rains (April - May) and short rains (November) make trails slippery and cloud cover reduces the extraordinary views that make Lemosho special.

Altitude Zones & Acclimatization

The Lemosho's extended itinerary is specifically designed to optimise acclimatization at each altitude band. Understanding what happens to your body at each zone helps you manage expectations and make good decisions on the mountain.

Rainforest Zone
1,800m - 3,000m
Lush, oxygen-rich environment. No altitude issues expected. Focus entirely on hydration (3-4L daily), warming up muscles, and establishing your trekking rhythm. Watch for afternoon rain showers - keep your rain jacket accessible.
15-25 - C day / 8-15 - C night
Heath & Moorland
3,000m - 4,000m
First altitude effects possible: mild headache, reduced appetite, increased urination. These are normal and expected - they do not mean you need to descend. Hydrate 3-4L per day. Diamox may help if you're particularly sensitive to altitude (discuss with your doctor before travel).
5-15 - C day / 0-5 - C night
Alpine Desert
4,000m - 5,000m
Significant altitude effects. Symptoms more pronounced: stronger headache, nausea, disturbed sleep, fatigue. Slow your pace dramatically. The "climb high, sleep low" strategy at Lava Tower is the Lemosho Route's key advantage at this stage. Never ignore severe symptoms (confusion, inability to walk straight, coughing up blood) - these require immediate descent.
0-10 - C day / -5-0 - C night
Arctic Summit Zone
5,000m - 5,895m
Severe altitude. Only 50% of the oxygen available at sea level. Your body's capacity for physical and cognitive function is dramatically reduced. Move extremely slowly, breathe deeply and rhythmically with each step, stay within arm's reach of your guide at all times. Trust your body, trust your guide, and trust the process.
-10 - C to -25 - C - Wind chill can make it feel -35 - C
Diamox (Acetazolamide) - Our Guides' Recommendation

Many climbers use Diamox (125-250mg twice daily, starting 2 days before the climb) as an acclimatization aid. It increases your breathing rate and speeds the body's acclimatization response. Consult your doctor before travel. Common side effects: increased urination and tingling in fingers/toes - both completely harmless. Do not take if allergic to sulphonamide drugs.

Frequently Asked Questions

We strongly recommend the 8-day itinerary for the vast majority of climbers. The extra night at Karanga Camp (4,200m) provides a crucial additional acclimatization day that meaningfully improves summit readiness and significantly reduces the risk and discomfort of altitude sickness. The 7-day option is viable for very fit, experienced high-altitude trekkers who have previously been above 4,000m without issues. If in doubt, choose 8 days - your summit experience will be far better.
You do not need to be an elite athlete, but a solid cardiovascular fitness base is important. Kilimanjaro is primarily a high-altitude endurance challenge rather than a technical mountaineering climb. We recommend 8-12 weeks of training before your trip: regular hiking (including some with a loaded pack), cardiovascular exercise 4-5 days per week, and several back-to-back training days to build endurance. Our guides calibrate the pace to your ability - the mountain is won with patience, not speed.
The 8-day itinerary spreads the route’s altitude gain across more stages and keeps the climb-high, sleep-low movement around Lava Tower. The additional time supports a steadier pace and gives guides more opportunity to monitor how each climber is responding. No route can guarantee a summit, and individual acclimatization remains the deciding factor.
No, the Barranco Wall is not dangerous and requires zero technical climbing experience. It is a hands-and-feet scramble over large rocks. While the exposure (height) is dramatic and the "Kissing Rock" section is challenging, it is tackled by thousands of people of all fitness levels and ages every year. Your LuiTours guide will position you carefully and support you at every step. The Wall is genuinely one of the most exciting and memorable parts of the Lemosho experience.
Your safety is always the absolute priority. If our guides determine that continuing to the summit poses a serious risk to your health, they will recommend descending. Reaching Stella Point (5,756m) - the crater rim - earns you an official Achievement Certificate and is genuinely an extraordinary accomplishment. Our guides are trained to make safety decisions carefully and in close consultation with you. The mountain will always be there for a return attempt - and we'd love to bring you back.
Our all-inclusive price covers: all KINAPA park fees and rescue fees, airport transfers, 1 night arrival and 1 night post-climb hotel accommodation, all camping equipment (tents, sleeping mats, dining tent, kitchen tent), all mountain meals (3 meals/day + snacks + unlimited hot drinks), certified lead guide, assistant guides, professional porters, emergency oxygen, daily pulse oximetry health monitoring, first aid kit, emergency stretcher, your summit certificate, and 24/7 WhatsApp support. The only significant costs not included are your international flights, Tanzania visa ($50), travel insurance, personal sleeping bag (rental available), and tips for the crew.
Absolutely - and it's one of Africa's most popular trip combinations. After the cold, challenging ascent of Kilimanjaro, a few days on Zanzibar's warm Indian Ocean beaches feels like paradise. LuiTours offers a range of Zanzibar extensions: 3-night to 7-night options including Stone Town tours, spice farm visits, Nungwi or Paje beach resorts, snorkelling, and dolphin tours. We handle all logistics including the Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar internal flight connection. Ask for our combination pricing when booking.
