Northern Tanzania safari wildlife

Tanzania's northern circuit is the most celebrated wildlife destination on earth, and this 5-day itinerary is its most complete expression - four entirely different ecosystems, four distinct wildlife characters, and five days of immersive game driving that gives you a complete cross-section of what makes northern Tanzania so extraordinary. This is not a highlights package. This is the real safari.

Tarangire opens the journey with Africa's greatest elephant concentrations and its most atmospheric ancient baobab landscape. The Serengeti - the world's most famous park - delivers two full days among the migration herds, big-cat encounters on the open plains, and the tented camp experience that defines the classic African safari. The Ngorongoro Crater concentrates 25,000 animals into a 260km - volcanic caldera for the most reliable Big 5 wildlife viewing on the continent. Lake Manyara closes the circuit with tree-climbing lions, flamingo-pink soda lake shores, and a groundwater forest that surprises every visitor who underestimated it.

Each park is completely different from the others. Each day delivers a distinct character, a new landscape, and a new set of defining wildlife moments. Experienced travellers consistently describe this 5-day itinerary as the finest short safari available in East Africa - a trip that delivers everything, wastes nothing, and leaves every guest saying: I wish I had booked more days.

The Best Value Safari on the Northern Circuit

The 5-day northern circuit safari offers the most complete wildlife experience available in northern Tanzania for its duration. Four parks across five days means a different signature moment every day - elephant mega-herds, migration plains, rhino crater floor, tree-climbing lions - while the per-day cost decreases compared to shorter itineraries. For travellers who can extend beyond 3 days, this is the itinerary that experienced safari operators recommend first.

Daily Itinerary

Day1
Arusha Tarangire National Park (Full Day) Farm of Dreams Lodge
~2 hrs from Arusha Elephant mega-herds Ancient baobabs & red earth Lion - Cheetah - Leopard

A full day is set aside for Arusha → Tarangire National Park (Full Day) → Farm of Dreams Lodge, allowing the experience to unfold without a rushed timetable. Inside Tarangire, baobab woodland and the river corridor create varied habitat. Elephants, giraffes, zebras, antelope and predators may be encountered, and your guide chooses roads according to current conditions rather than promising particular sightings. On the 5 Days Tarangire, Serengeti, Ngorongoro & Lake Manyara Safari, this is the main focus of day 1.

Guide's Tip: The termite mounds at Tarangire in the late afternoon are among the most photogenic scenes in Africa.

Day2
Tarangire Serengeti National Park (Full Day Drive & Arrival) Serengeti Heritage Tented Camp
Ngorongoro Highlands drive First Serengeti wildlife Endless plains open up Africa's premier wildlife park

Your journey begins at the agreed airport or meeting point, where the LuiTours team welcomes you and confirms the day’s transfer. This is a practical travel stage, but the drive also offers a useful first look at the region and its everyday rhythm. On the 5 Days Tarangire, Serengeti, Ngorongoro & Lake Manyara Safari, this is the main focus of day 2.

Guide's Tip: As you enter the Serengeti through Naabi Hills gate, ask your guide to slow down through the gate area - baboons are almost always present and the transition from Ngorongoro.

The day links the Serengeti plains with the cooler Ngorongoro highlands, passing grassland, volcanic slopes and broad viewpoints along the way. Wildlife may be encountered en route, but timing remains flexible and follows current conditions.

Guide's Tip: On this transitional day, ask your guide to factor in a stop at the Ngorongoro Crater rim viewpoint on the afternoon drive through the highlands.

Day4
Ngorongoro Crater Full Day Game Drive Farm of Dreams Lodge
? 610m descent into the Crater Endangered Black Rhino UNESCO World Heritage 1979 25,000 Resident Animals

A full day is set aside for Ngorongoro Crater Full Day Game Drive → Farm of Dreams Lodge, allowing the experience to unfold without a rushed timetable. The Ngorongoro landscape combines a forested rim with grassland, wetlands and soda-lake habitat on the crater floor. Wildlife can be diverse, but the guide reads conditions carefully and keeps every sighting patient and responsible. On the 5 Days Tarangire, Serengeti, Ngorongoro & Lake Manyara Safari, this is the main focus of day 4.

Guide's Tip: Begin your crater game drive heading immediately to the Lerai Forest on the western floor - the highest-probability zone for black rhino.
Ngorongoro Crater Full Day Game Drive Farm of Dreams Lodge
Day5
Lake Manyara National Park (Full Day) Return to Arusha
Tree-climbing lions Flamingo flocks on soda lake Rift Valley groundwater forest 400+ Bird Species

A full day is set aside for Lake Manyara National Park (Full Day) → Return to Arusha, allowing the experience to unfold without a rushed timetable. Lake Manyara lies beneath the Rift Valley escarpment, with groundwater forest, open floodplain and lakeshore habitat close together. Elephants, baboons, monkeys, antelope and waterbirds may be seen as conditions allow. On the 5 Days Tarangire, Serengeti, Ngorongoro & Lake Manyara Safari, this is the main focus of day 5.

Guide's Tip: Drive slowly through the groundwater forest section at the park entrance - the dense canopy of giant fig and mahogany trees is the tree-climbing lions' primary habitat zone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Five days across four completely different parks gives you the full range of the northern circuit's extraordinary wildlife and landscape diversity - Tarangire's baobab elephants, Serengeti's migration and big cats, Ngorongoro's crater-floor rhino and lion, Manyara's tree-climbing lions and flamingos - in a sequence where each day delivers an entirely new experience. The per-day cost of a 5-day safari is also lower than shorter itineraries, as fixed costs (guide, vehicle, logistics) are spread across more days. Experienced safari operators consistently recommend this itinerary as the first choice for travellers who have 5 or more days available in northern Tanzania.
The migration is a year-round phenomenon - wildebeest are always present in the Serengeti ecosystem. The famous river crossings (July - October, northern Serengeti) are the most dramatic expression of the migration. The calving season (January - March, southern plains) is equally extraordinary. With one full day and an early morning drive in the Serengeti, your LuiTours guide will route the game drives to wherever migration activity is highest based on current herd movements. Even outside peak migration windows, the Serengeti's resident wildlife population ensures consistently spectacular game viewing every day of the year.
More reliable than almost any other specific wildlife encounter on the northern circuit - which is saying something. Lake Manyara's tree-climbing lion behaviour has been documented and studied here for decades, and the park's resident prides use the large fig trees in the groundwater forest as resting platforms with remarkable consistency. Your LuiTours guide will know exactly where the resident prides have been sighted in the days before your visit. While no wildlife sighting is ever guaranteed, our guests encounter tree-climbing lions on the overwhelming majority of Manyara game drives.
This is genuinely one of the finest first-safari itineraries available anywhere in Africa - and it works beautifully for families of all ages. The four parks are all well-serviced, the accommodation is comfortable and secure, and the game drives take place in comfortable 4x4 Land Cruisers where guests set their own pace for photography and viewing stops. The variety of experiences across five days - different parks, different landscapes, different signature wildlife moments each day - keeps both children and adults consistently engaged. First-time safari guests on this itinerary universally describe it as transformative, and almost all immediately begin planning when to return for longer.
Yes - an optional Maasai village visit in the Ngorongoro Highlands is available on Day 4 at extra cost. This provides a brief but meaningful cultural encounter with the Ngorongoro Maasai - meeting elders, warriors, women, and children, and learning about Maasai beliefs, traditions, and their extraordinary coexistence with the Ngorongoro Conservation Area's wildlife. For a deeper experience, LuiTours also offers a separate 2-day Maasai Village Tour at Olpopongi Village which can be combined with this safari as an extension.
Sleeping under canvas inside the Serengeti is one of the defining experiences of an East African safari - and one that many guests describe as the single most memorable night of the entire 5-day itinerary. Serengeti Heritage Tented Camp provides comfortable, en-suite tented accommodation with proper beds and bedding, hot water, and a well-equipped dining area. What makes it unique is what canvas walls cannot block out: the sounds of the African night. Lions calling at 2am. Hyenas whooping in the distance. The rumble of distant herds. The extraordinary chorus of birdsong at first light. No hotel can replicate this, and guests who arrive with any apprehension about tented accommodation invariably leave as its most devoted advocates.
