Route Overview
The Shira Route reaches Kilimanjaro’s western highlands by vehicle and begins trekking on the Shira Plateau at roughly 3,500 metres. It crosses open volcanic moorland, joins the Lemosho trail near Shira 2, and then follows the Southern Circuit through Lava Tower, Barranco and Karanga toward the summit.
Starting high is the route’s defining challenge. Climbers miss the gradual rainforest ascent used on Lemosho, so the first stages require conservative pacing and close attention to altitude symptoms. Later climb-high, sleep-low sections improve the acclimatization pattern, but prior experience above 3,000 metres is valuable and the route is not the gentlest choice for a first high-altitude trek.
Shira suits fit walkers who want immediate access to the plateau’s wide volcanic scenery and understand the implications of a high starting point. Highlights include Shira Cathedral, views of Kibo across the plateau, Lava Tower and the Barranco Wall. The summit approach follows the Southern Circuit to Barafu, Stella Point and Uhuru Peak.
Shira at a glance
Remarkable plateau scenery and a distinctive high start reward prepared trekkers, while the rapid initial altitude gain demands careful pacing and honest assessment of prior altitude experience.
Daily Itinerary
The Shira Route: Begin at Altitude
The Shira Route's defining feature is its dramatic start: a 4WD vehicle drives you directly onto the Shira Plateau at 3,500m on Day 1 - bypassing the rainforest entirely and placing you immediately into the high moorland and volcanic landscape. From Shira 1 Camp, the route traverses the plateau east to Shira 2 (where it converges with the Lemosho Route) before following the full Southern Circuit over the Barranco Wall to the summit. Note: starting at 3,500m on Day 1 without lower-altitude acclimatization is one reason we recommend prior altitude experience for this route.
The trail reveals a distinct mountain zone, from forest and heath to open moorland or alpine terrain, and the measured pace supports acclimatization.
Starting from Shira 1 Camp, the journey leads to Shira 2 Camp (via Shira Cathedral) through the landscapes named in the program. The trail reveals a distinct mountain zone, from forest and heath to open moorland or alpine terrain, and the measured pace supports acclimatization.
From Shira 2, you set out for Barranco Camp at a pace suited to the distance and planned activity. The trail climbs into sparse alpine desert around Lava Tower before descending to sleep lower. This deliberate gain and loss of altitude is an important acclimatization stage, and the pace is adjusted to how the group is responding. On the LuiTours & Safaris - Tanzania Safari & Kilimanjaro Experts, this is the main focus of day 3.
Barranco Camp is the starting point for today’s journey to Karanga Camp (via Barranco Wall). The Barranco Wall is a hands-on mountain passage rather than a technical climb. Guides manage spacing and point out secure foot and hand placements before the route opens toward the Karanga Valley and Kilimanjaro’s southern glaciers.
Starting from Karanga Camp, the journey leads to Barafu Base Camp through the landscapes named in the program. The path crosses dry alpine terrain toward exposed Barafu Camp. Arrival is intentionally early enough for rest, hydration, an equipment check and a clear briefing before the summit attempt.
The climb starts in the cool, dark hours and follows a slow, deliberate pace toward the crater rim or summit. Conditions, altitude and each trekker’s wellbeing determine progress; the descent then continues to the camp or gate named in the route.
Today’s stage links Mweka Camp with Moshi (Celebration!), giving the journey a clear sense of place from beginning to end. The descent leaves the alpine slopes for heath and then rainforest, with warmer air and denser vegetation returning quickly. Careful footwork matters on steeper or damp sections before the walk finishes at Mweka Gate. On the LuiTours & Safaris - Tanzania Safari & Kilimanjaro Experts, this is the main focus of day 7.

Best Time to Climb Shira
Kilimanjaro can be climbed year-round. The Shira Route's plateau approach is fully exposed to weather from the very first day - on the open Shira Plateau, bad weather has nowhere to hide. Choosing the dry season is particularly important for this route, where the views of the volcanic landscape are central to the experience.
| Climate Zone | Altitude | Day Temp | Night Temp | Conditions |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shira Plateau (Days 1-2) | 3,500-3,840m | 5-15 - C | -2-5 - C | Exposed; cold winds; stunning views when clear |
| Alpine Desert (Days 3-5) | 3,840-4,800m | 0-10 - C | -5-0 - C | Dry, thin air, intense UV radiation |
| Arctic Summit (Day 6) | 4,800-5,895m | -10 - -5 - C | -15 - -25 - C | Arctic conditions, wind, ice possible |
| Rainforest Descent (Day 7) | 3,100-1,640m | 15-25 - C | 8-15 - C | Warm, humid; dramatic contrast to summit |
Altitude Zones & Acclimatization
The Shira Route's most important acclimatization consideration is its unusual start: arriving at 3,500m on Day 1 by vehicle eliminates the gradual altitude gain that other routes achieve in the rainforest zone. Understanding what this means for your body is essential to managing the route safely and successfully.
Diamox on the Shira Route - Our Recommendation
Because the Shira Route begins at 3,500m with no gradual lower-altitude approach, we recommend that climbers consider Diamox (125-250mg twice daily, starting 2 days before the climb). The drug accelerates your body's natural acclimatization by increasing breathing rate. Always consult your doctor before travel. Common side effects - increased urination and tingling fingers/toes - are harmless. Do not take if allergic to sulphonamide drugs.
