If you only have three days for a Tanzania safari, this itinerary delivers the two most celebrated wildlife destinations on the African continent - in a sequence that builds from awe-inspiring to unforgettable. The Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater are names that define East African safari, and experiencing both in a single intelligently routed journey gives you a complete picture of why Tanzania commands the world's attention.

The Serengeti is unquestionably the world's most famous national park - 18,000 square kilometres of seemingly endless plains, home to the greatest wildlife spectacle on earth: the annual migration of 2 million wildebeest and 500,000 zebra. Even outside migration season, the Serengeti's resident wildlife population includes the highest concentration of big cats anywhere on the planet, with lions, cheetahs, and leopards regularly sighted alongside vast herds of resident grazers.

The Ngorongoro Crater is the Serengeti's extraordinary counterpart - a 260km - collapsed volcanic caldera that functions as a permanently sealed wildlife paradise. Some 25,000 large mammals live within its walls, including the endangered black rhino (seen with higher reliability here than anywhere else on earth) and dense resident lion prides. Your guide descends 610 metres to the crater floor, where wildlife encounters unfold in rapid succession across open short-grass plains.

Why This Combination Works So Well

The Serengeti and Ngorongoro are geographically connected - the route between them passes through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, itself a spectacular landscape of highland forests, Maasai pastoralism, and sweeping caldera views. The contrast between the Serengeti's vast open horizons and the crater's enclosed intimacy creates a safari narrative arc that experienced travellers consistently rate as among the finest short safari experiences in Africa.

Daily Itinerary

Day1
Arusha Serengeti National Park (Full Day) Serengeti Heritage Tented Camp
~5-6 hrs to Serengeti Wildebeest migration herds Endless golden plains Highest big-cat density on earth

A full day is set aside for Arusha → Serengeti National Park (Full Day) → Serengeti Heritage Tented Camp, allowing the experience to unfold without a rushed timetable. The route crosses open plains, seasonal grasslands and scattered kopjes. Plains game, elephants and predators may be seen, while the location of migratory herds changes with rainfall and cannot be guaranteed. On the 3 Days Serengeti & Ngorongoro Crater Safari, this is the main focus of day 1.

Guide's Tip: The kopjes - granite rock formations rising from the plains - are favoured lion and cheetah resting spots in the middle of the day.

Guide's Tip: Evening drives in the Seronera Valley - where the river attracts wildlife throughout the dry season - regularly produce lion pride encounters.

The final travel arrangements begin from the confirmed hotel, lodge or meeting point, with timing built around the scheduled flight or onward transfer. The day is paced around the confirmed flight, with realistic time for check-in, luggage and the road transfer on either side. On the 3 Days Serengeti & Ngorongoro Crater Safari, this is the main focus of day 3.

Guide's Tip: The Lerai Forest on the crater's western floor is the black rhino's preferred territory and the highest-probability sighting zone.

Best Time to Visit

Both the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater offer superb game viewing year-round. Ngorongoro's enclosed ecosystem never truly has an off-season. The Serengeti's Great Migration follows a seasonal circuit - the famous river crossings occur July - October in the northern Serengeti, while the calving season on the southern plains (Jan - Mar) offers its own extraordinary spectacle.

Frequently Asked Questions

The migration is a year-round phenomenon - there are always wildebeest somewhere in the Serengeti ecosystem. The famous Mara River crossings (where wildebeest plunge into crocodile-filled rivers in dramatic scenes) occur in the northern Serengeti from approximately July to October. The calving season on the southern plains (January to March) offers a different but equally extraordinary spectacle. Outside these peak windows, you will still encounter enormous wildebeest herds - the Serengeti's resident population is vast - but the dramatic crossing scenes are seasonal. Your LuiTours guide will advise on current migration position and route game drives accordingly.
Yes - all five of Africa's Big 5 species (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and black rhino) are present and regularly sighted across the Serengeti and Ngorongoro. The Ngorongoro Crater is the most reliable Big 5 location in East Africa - particularly for the endangered black rhino, which is seen here with greater consistency than anywhere else. The Serengeti's vast resident lion and cheetah populations, along with its large elephant and buffalo herds, make it one of the finest game viewing destinations anywhere. No safari sighting is ever guaranteed, but this itinerary gives you the highest probability of Big 5 encounters available in a 3-day Tanzania safari.
This is one of the finest possible first-safari itineraries in Africa, and it is consistently our most popular option for travellers experiencing their first East African safari. The parks are well-served, the accommodation is comfortable, and the wildlife encounters are so frequent and varied that even first-time safari guests return describing it as a life-changing experience. You spend all game drives in a comfortable 4x4 Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof, set your own pace for photography and viewing stops, and come back to proper accommodation with good food each evening. No special fitness is required. First-time guests on this itinerary almost universally say they wish they had booked more days.
Yes - an optional Maasai village visit in the Ngorongoro Highlands is available on Day 3 at extra cost. The Ngorongoro Maasai are the only people on earth who live within the boundaries of a UNESCO World Heritage Site while sharing resources with the crater's resident wildlife - a remarkable cultural and ecological story. The visit gives you a brief but meaningful cultural encounter: meeting elders, warriors, women, and children, and learning about Maasai beliefs, traditions, and daily life. For a deeper, fully immersive Maasai experience, LuiTours also offers a separate 2-day Maasai Village Tour at Olpopongi Village.
Absolutely - and extending creates some of the finest multi-day safari itineraries available anywhere. Adding Tarangire National Park (famous for Africa's greatest elephant concentrations and ancient baobab landscapes) creates a 4-day safari. Adding both Tarangire and Lake Manyara (famous for tree-climbing lions and flamingo flocks) creates our acclaimed 5-day northern circuit safari. All multi-day extensions are offered at better per-day rates than booking individually. Contact LuiTours for extension pricing and availability.
LuiTours guides are certified professional wildlife guides with years of specific experience in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro ecosystems. What consistently distinguishes them in traveller feedback is the quality of interpretation they provide - narrating animal behaviour as it unfolds, explaining ecological relationships, knowing individual animals and resident prides by sight, and finding sightings that other vehicles miss by knowing exactly where and when to look. Safari quality is overwhelmingly determined by guide quality. We are happy to introduce you to your guide before departure, and our guides maintain direct radio contact with other guides across both parks to track wildlife movements in real time.
