Day1
Mikumi Game Drive
6:00am pickup Dar es Salaam Hot lunch Morogoro Elephant & giraffe welcome Afternoon floodplain drive

You’ll be picked up in Dar es Salaam at 6:00am and drive six hours to Mikumi National Park. We’ll stop in Morogoro for hot lunches and arrive in the park in time for an afternoon game drive. You’ll see herds of impala, elephants, Masai giraffes, lions, wildebeests, buffaloes, and many other animals. Dinner and your overnight stay will be at Camp Lilac Mikumi.

Guide's Tip: The Mkata floodplain at dusk is prime territory for lion activity - the prides move into position as the light fades and the temperature drops.

Nyerere Game Drive
Dawn predator activity African wild dog search Bush picnic lunch Multi-habitat exploration

After breakfast at the lodge, we’ll depart on a game drive with packed lunches in hand. You can expect to see lion, elephant, giraffe, buffalo, zebra, and hyena (among others). You’ll eat lunch in the afternoon and rest before finishing your game drive and returning to the lodge.

Guide's Tip: After a full day in Nyerere following two days in Mikumi, the contrast in ecological character between the two parks is striking - Mikumi's open-plain simplicity versus.
Nyerere Game Drive
Day5
Kilwa Beach
Scenic drive to coast Lunch boxes en route Optional fish market visit Indian Ocean arrival

After breakfast at the lodge, we’ll depart with lunch boxes in hand for Kilwa Beach. We’ll be staying at an excellent lodge located on the Indian Ocean. You can choose to visit the fish market or just spend the afternoon and evening at your leisure. You'll be staying at the lodge on a full board basis. Dinner and overnight at Kilwa Beach Lodge

Guide's Tip: The fish market at Kilwa Masoko is best visited in the late afternoon when the fishing dhows return.
Kilwa Beach
Day6
Kilwa Masoko
UNESCO World Heritage site Boat to Kilwa Kisiwani Picnic lunch Swahili history & Indian Ocean

After breakfast we’ll depart with a picnic lunch in hand to Kilwa Kisiwani. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage site due to its influence on the birth of Swahili culture, Kilwa Kisiwani is a fishing village that was once occupied by Arabs. They minted gold and sold spices, jewelry, and slaves—all while holding parties under the light of the moon. Songo Mnara, a neighboring small island close to Kisiwani, was a Swahili stone town that was founded in the early 19th century. Its comparatively short history compared to its more illustrious neighbor has allowed archaeologists to examine early Swahili houses within a specific time period. Dinner and your overnight stay will be at Kilwa Beach Lodge

Guide's Tip: Kilwa Kisiwani is one of Tanzania's best-kept secrets - fewer than a fraction of the tourists who visit Serengeti ever visit this extraordinary site.
Kilwa Masoko
Day7
Kilwa - Dar es Salaam
Final breakfast by the ocean Drive to Dar es Salaam Packed lunch en route Airport / hotel / ferry drop-off

After breakfast at the lodge, you’ll be transferred to Dar es Salaam with a packed lunch in hand. You’ll be dropped off at the hotel or the airport/ferry.

Guide's Tip: Allow adequate time on Day 7 for airport transfers - the drive from Kilwa can take 4-5 hours.

Best Time to Visit

Mikumi and Nyerere offer excellent game viewing year-round, while Kilwa Beach is wonderful in any season thanks to the warm Indian Ocean. The dry season (June - October) is peak for both parks - wildlife concentrates around water and predator activity peaks. The green season brings lush scenery and exceptional birding. Kilwa is best avoided during April - May's heaviest rains when coastal roads can become difficult, but is beautiful throughout the rest of the year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Kilwa Kisiwani is one of East Africa's most significant and least-visited UNESCO World Heritage sites. The island was once the most powerful trading city on the East African coast - controlling the gold trade from Great Zimbabwe and trading across the Indian Ocean to Arabia, India, and Persia. The ruins of the Great Mosque (one of the largest in sub-Saharan Africa) and the Husuni Kubwa Palace are extraordinary, and the combination of archaeology, Indian Ocean scenery, and dhow boat crossing creates a completely different experience to anything on the northern Tanzania tourist circuit.
Seven days is the ideal length for this combination of two parks and Kilwa Beach. Two days in Mikumi provides sufficient time to cover the park's key zones thoroughly. The Nyerere sections - boat safari on Day 3 and full game drive on Day 4 - deliver everything the park offers at its best. Two days at Kilwa allows for relaxation and the full UNESCO boat excursion without feeling rushed. Shorter versions of this itinerary cut the beach time; longer versions can add a third Nyerere game drive day or extend the Kilwa stay.
Very different, which is exactly what makes this combination so rewarding. Mikumi is characterised by open savannah - the Mkata floodplain is spectacularly open, lion and buffalo sightings are frequent, and the landscape resembles Serengeti more than most southern parks. Nyerere is characterised by ecosystem complexity - the Rufiji River system creates wetlands, the miombo woodland supports different species, and the African wild dog is Nyerere's signature predator. Combining both provides the full range of southern Tanzania's wildlife and landscape diversity.
Yes - LuiTours specialises in tailored southern circuit itineraries. Ruaha National Park, Udzungwa Mountains, additional nights in either park, and extended Kilwa stays can all be incorporated.
