Best Time to Visit

Ruaha National Park offers excellent game viewing year-round due to its semi-arid climate that produces a longer dry season than most Tanzania parks. The peak dry season (June - October) delivers the most concentrated wildlife around the Ruaha River - lions, leopards, and wild dogs are highly active, and elephant herds of 100 or more converge on the permanent water. The short rains (November - December) green the landscape without significantly impeding game viewing, and the post-rain period (January - February) produces excellent predator activity as prey animals are widely dispersed. Ruaha avoids the April - May long rains better than many parks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ruaha is approximately 625 kilometres from Dar es Salaam - a 10+ hour drive that would consume most of the first and last days of any overland safari. The flight to Iringa (typically under 1 hour) converts two travel days into two additional full game drive days, significantly improving the wildlife experience. The fly-in approach is the standard and recommended way to access Ruaha for guests based in Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar, and is reflected in the safari's premium pricing.
Ruaha occupies a fundamentally different ecological zone - the transition between East African savannah and miombo woodland - that produces species not commonly found in other Tanzania parks. Greater kudu and sable antelope are iconic Ruaha specialities. The park's lion density is the highest on the continent. Its 570+ bird species include many arid-zone specialists absent from northern Tanzania. And its landscape of ancient baobabs, red-earth valleys, and the dramatic Ruaha River creates a visual character that is completely distinct from Serengeti's plains or Mikumi's floodplain. It is Tanzania's best-kept secret.
Ruaha Hilltop Lodge is a well-positioned mid-range lodge outside the park in Iringa district, offering comfortable accommodation with good food and reliable access to Ruaha's main wildlife zones. The location on elevated ground provides good views across the surrounding landscape, and the lodge is a comfortable base for the long game drive days that Ruaha rewards. The 40-minute drive from the lodge to the park entrance through local villages and savannah landscape is part of the authentic experience.
Yes - and we strongly recommend it. The most popular combination is Ruaha followed by Zanzibar, connected by a direct flight from Iringa. LuiTours also offers multi-park itineraries combining Ruaha with Mikumi, Nyerere, and Udzungwa for an extended southern circuit experience. The 6-day Mikumi and Ruaha safari is particularly popular. Contact us on WhatsApp to discuss combination options and receive a customised itinerary and quote.
