Best Time to Visit

This itinerary runs year-round and offers rewarding experiences in every season. Mikumi game viewing peaks in the dry season (June–October) when wildlife concentrates around water sources. The Udzungwa hike and Sanje Waterfalls are accessible year-round, though the falls are most spectacular after rainfall (March–May and November–December). The Maasai cultural visit is available in all months. For the combination of excellent game viewing and full-flowing waterfalls, the transitional months of May–June and October–November are particularly rewarding.

Frequently Asked Questions

The hike to Sanje Waterfalls is a moderate trek of approximately 3–4 kilometres return with around 200 metres of elevation gain on forest trails that can be muddy and uneven. It is suitable for most guests who are in reasonable health and comfortable with walking on uneven terrain. Good walking shoes or hiking boots are essential. The hike is not recommended for guests with significant mobility restrictions, but the rest of the itinerary (Mikumi game drives and Maasai visit) can be enjoyed without the hike. Please mention any physical limitations when booking.
Yes — swimming in the natural pools at the base of the Sanje Waterfalls is one of the highlights of this safari and is both permitted and encouraged. The pools are safe for swimming and the experience of standing beneath a 170-metre waterfall in one of Africa's most pristine forest environments is genuinely extraordinary. Bring a swimsuit and a towel, and expect to get wet — most guests describe this as one of the most memorable moments of their entire Tanzania visit.
The Maasai village visit is a genuine cultural exchange with a local Maasai community in the Udzungwa foothills area. Guests are welcomed into the village, observe traditional dances and ceremonies, learn about the Maasai pastoral way of life and its deep connection to the landscape, and have the opportunity to interact with community members through our guide's translation. The visit is conducted with respect for community privacy and cultural protocols, and a portion of the visit fee goes directly to the community.
Udzungwa has a very different species profile to Mikumi. The mountains are home to the endemic Udzungwa red colobus monkey (found only in this range), the Iringa red colobus, and blue monkey. The forest also supports elephant, buffalo, and a remarkable bird diversity including many endemics and Afromontane specialists. The contrast in species between Mikumi's savannah fauna and Udzungwa's forest primates and montane birds is one of the most striking features of this dual-ecosystem itinerary.
