Daily Itinerary

Day1
Tarangire game drive
~2 hr drive from Arusha Full-day game drive Ancient Baobab landscape Lion - Cheetah - Leopard

Today you will drive to Tarangire for a full day game drive. One of Africa’s little-known gems. The landscape is incredibly diverse with a mix that is not found anywhere else on the northern safari circuit it is dotted with ancient baobab trees & large termite mounds & the Tarangire River is the only source of water during the dry season when the harsh sun suck the moisture from the landscape, baking the earth a dusty red while during the wet season you will experience dense bush & luscious high grasses. Famous for its large elephant population, it is also home to zebra, wildebeest, giraffe, water buck, baboons, & impala. Predators include lion, cheetah & leopard. The swamps are shared by flocks of birds green wood hoopoes, lovebirds, tallish herons, white bellied go-away birds & giant kingfishers. On drier ground you will find the kori bustard & the heaviest of the flying birds; the ostrich.

  • Dinner and overnight at Farm of Dreams Lodge
Guide's Tip: Position yourself at the river crossing points and swamps from mid-morning - this is where Tarangire's famous elephant gatherings occur as the herds arrive to drink and bathe.

You will visit a Maasai Village in the Ngorongoro Highlands (optional at extra cost) where you will meet the Elders, Warriors, women & children & learn about the culture, beliefs & traditions of Tanzania’s last nomadic tribe. The Crater is famous for Africa’s best game viewing as there is an ever-present abundance of wildlife due to the permanent water supply on the crater floor. You will Spot the endangered black rhino, wildebeest, buffalo, zebra, eland, Grant’s & Thomson’s gazelle &, giant tusked elephants plus lions & leopards, cheetahs as well as scavengers such as spotted hyenas, jackals & wild dogs. Best Time to Visit

Both Tarangire and Ngorongoro offer excellent game viewing year-round. Ngorongoro's closed ecosystem means it never truly has an "off season" - the crater delivers reliably in every month. Tarangire is most spectacular in the dry season when wildlife concentrations at the river are at their peak.

Frequently Asked Questions

The honest answer is: possibly, but not guaranteed - and that's part of what makes wildlife safaris extraordinary rather than scripted theme parks. The Ngorongoro Crater gives you the highest probability of Big 5 sightings of any location in Tanzania - particularly for black rhino and lion, which are seen there with exceptional reliability. Elephant and buffalo are virtually certain. Leopard is the most elusive of the five and requires some luck regardless of location. Your LuiTours guide knows every productive game-viewing spot and will maximise your chances. Most 2-day guests see 4 or 5 of the Big 5.
LuiTours uses 4x4 Toyota Land Cruisers with pop-up roofs, providing 360-degree viewing from elevated standing positions - the gold standard for African safari game viewing. Private tours have 1-6 guests in one vehicle with your dedicated guide. Shared tours are available for solo travellers or couples looking to reduce costs - these typically have 4-6 guests of mixed nationalities and are an excellent way to meet fellow travellers. Contact us to specify private or shared when requesting your quote.
The descent into the crater is a genuinely surreal experience - your vehicle winds down a steep road from mist-covered forest into a completely different world. The crater floor is open short-grass plain ringed by the caldera walls, with lakes, marshes, and acacia woodland creating distinct wildlife habitat zones. Because the crater is enclosed, wildlife doesn't migrate out - animals are always present in high density. The Ngorongoro Conservation Area also allows Maasai cattle to graze on the crater rim but not the floor, creating an extraordinary landscape where ancient human and wildlife coexistence is visible and ongoing.
Two days is a genuinely satisfying safari experience and delivers substantial wildlife viewing across two very different ecosystems. However, if your schedule allows, adding a third day to visit Lake Manyara National Park - which our 3-day itinerary includes - adds extraordinary value: tree-climbing lions, flamingo flocks, and a completely different landscape character. For travellers who've never been on an African safari, we'd also note that once you're here, the desire to see more is overwhelming - so if you have flexibility, building in extra days is rarely regretted.
Essential items: binoculars (even cheap ones dramatically enhance game viewing), a camera with a zoom lens if you have one, sunscreen and a hat (the pop-up roof exposes you to strong sun), a light jacket for early morning drives and the cool Ngorongoro Highlands, and comfortable, neutral-coloured clothing (avoid bright colours and white). We provide bottled water and picnic lunches. A field guide to East African mammals and birds will enrich your experience enormously - your guide can recommend the best ones.
Absolutely - and LuiTours specialises in building customised northern Tanzania itineraries. The natural extension of this 2-day trip is our 3-day Tarangire, Ngorongoro & Lake Manyara safari. For longer adventures, the 5-day northern circuit adds Serengeti, which many consider the safari world's greatest experience. The Serengeti's Great Wildebeest Migration (July - October) is the largest animal movement on earth. Contact us for any extension - we'll build an itinerary around your interests, dates, and budget with no booking fees.
