Best Time to Visit

The Southern Circuit parks are rewarding year-round, but the dry season (June - October) is the peak period for game viewing - wildlife concentrates around rivers and water sources, making drives especially productive. The green season (November - May) brings lush scenery, excellent birding, and fewer visitors. Udzungwa's waterfall hike is enjoyable year-round, with the trails most comfortable in drier months.

Frequently Asked Questions

Each of the four southern parks offers a genuinely different ecosystem and wildlife experience. Nyerere provides the unique Rufiji boat safari and African wild dog encounters. Mikumi delivers accessible open-country plains game. Udzungwa is an ancient biodiversity hotspot unlike anything on the game-drive circuit. Ruaha offers the greatest elephant herds and the rarest antelope species. Together they form the most complete picture of East Africa's wildlife available in a single itinerary.
The hike to Sanje Waterfalls is rated as moderate. The trail involves a sustained uphill climb through dense rainforest over several hours, requiring reasonable fitness and sturdy footwear. The descent is generally easier. The effort is rewarded with spectacular waterfall views and excellent wildlife encounters - most guests with average fitness complete the hike comfortably. Your guide will set a pace appropriate for the group.
Both parks are vast and offer exceptional game viewing with very low visitor density. Nyerere is uniquely defined by its boat safari on the Rufiji River and its importance as a wild dog stronghold. Ruaha, as Tanzania's largest national park, offers arguably the most impressive elephant viewing anywhere in East Africa, along with the rarer antelope species (greater kudu, roan, sable) that are largely absent from the northern parks. Together they offer complementary and non-overlapping wildlife experiences.
Accommodation across the 10-day itinerary consists of comfortable mid-range safari lodges: Selous Safari Lodge in Nyerere, Camp Lilac Mikumi in Mikumi, and Ruaha Hilltop Lodge in Ruaha - all offering full board, en-suite rooms, and authentic bush settings. None of the lodges are luxury properties, but all provide comfortable, clean accommodation with good food and attentive service appropriate for an extended southern circuit itinerary.
